Delane Parnell

Entrepreneur and Esports Pioneer

Delane Parnell (born August 24, 1992) is an American entrepreneur best known as the founder and former CEO of PlayVS, a pioneering platform that brings organized esports to high schools and colleges across the U.S. Early Life & Background Born and raised in Western Detroit, Parnell grew up in challenging circumstances—raised by a single mother, his father was tragically killed before his birth, and he spent significant time with a family friend battling addiction. As he reflects: “I didn’t grow up in an ideal family environment”. At age 13, he began working 40+ hours per week at a MetroPCS store, both to support his family and avoid falling into gang life. Entrepreneurial Childhood By 17, Parnell had purchased three cell phone stores and joined the founding team of Executive Car Rental, which now operates 16 locations across Michigan. Following a brief stint at the University of Michigan in 2010, he dropped out to pursue business full-time. Heating Up in Tech & Esports Parnell’s passion for tech was fueled by Detroit’s startup scene. He worked at IncWell Venture Capital—becoming the youngest Black venture capitalist in the U.S.—and joined the early team at Rocket Fiber. While there, he founded Rush Esports, which was later acquired by TSM. Founding PlayVS & Scaling Scholastic Esports In 2017, after meeting investor Peter Pham at SXSW, Parnell moved to Los Angeles to pursue his vision. In January 2018, he officially founded PlayVS, and by April, had secured an exclusive partnership with the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS)—making esports an officially sanctioned high school activity. PlayVS has since raised over $100 million in venture capital and onboarded thousands of schools. Stepping Down & Legacy In May 2023, Parnell stepped down as CEO and transitioned to a senior advisory role while remaining on the board. He continues to shape the esports ecosystem and inspire Black tech founders. Impact & Recognition Named to Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2019, Parnell has been celebrated for transforming esports into a structured, accessible avenue for student growth and inclusion. His story emphasizes resilience, opportunity, and community empowerment.
